SEG President Koster Visits USTC

On Friday, Apr.1, Invited by Thousand Talents Program Professor ZHANG Jie, the SEG President Dr. Klaas Koster and Global Relations & Meetings Director Dr. Terry Todd visited University of Science and Technology of China(USTC). Dr. Koster and Dr.Terry, with several industry sponsors, attend the establishment ceremony of USTC SEG Student Chapter. More than 400 audiences, including 200 Student Chapter members joined. The ceremony was hosted by Prof. ZHANG Jie.

As a beginning, SEG President Dr. Koster gave the speech SEG Priorities 2011 as a greeting to the new-born Student Chapter, as well as an introduction to SEG and its programs. Society of Exploration Geophysicists is the largest professional society for global oil and natural gas exploration industry, which has over 33,000 members from 138 countries, and annually holds more than fifty academic conferences around the world. It aims at promoting geophysics science, and the education of young geophysicists.
YE Ruichao, senior student from School of Earth and Space Science (ESS), on behalf of the chapter, thanked for the support of the establishment of the chapter. Several donation procedures were launched afterwards, including a seismograph valued 500,000RMB and ten 4000 RMB scholarships annually offered by Laurel Industry, $5000 each year supporting of the Chapter’s academic activities especially the SUM (Stanford, USTC and MIT) Summer Campus and eight software system offered by GeoTomo, free usage of more than 50 software products offered by Paradigm Geophysical Ltd, and the usage of all software products offered by LandOcean Energy Services Co.,. Prof. CHEN Xiaofei, Dean of School of ESS, signed the agreements with the company representatives.Figure 2: The establishment ceremony of USTC SEG Student Chapter
USTC President HOU Jianguo and Vice President CHEN Chusheng met Dr. Koster during his visit.
